Everything I say to him is wrong and most of our conversations end with him not speaking to me.

And I think he hates me.

I try not to. I try to be as non-confrontational as I can. It always ends with me saying the wrong thing and upsetting him.

...Do you mean Ned-nonconfrontational? The one where you wear someone away like a drip on limestone? Or actually nonconfrontational?

Drip 'arder. Alpha's prone to tantrums, I've noticed. I think 'e'll thank you in the long run for not letting it distance you from 'im.

Can you graduate an inmate who hates you?

I 'aven't yet, I know that much. It's not personal, though, Ned, 'e's just angry at the 'ole world and you're the nearest bit of it 'e can vent on. 'E'll get over it.

I'm scared I'm doing more harm to him than good. There has to be a better warden for him. Someone who knows what they're doing and won't upset him every conversation.

Do you think 'e's actually upset, or do you think 'e's playing up to get you to back off?

It's hard to tell.

I think he's genuinely upset but plays it up because he knows it makes me feel terrible.

That sounds like our Alpha. 'Ave you 'ad any luck pinpointing what upsets 'im, exactly? Or do you back off?

He hates being compared to anyone. He needs to...be his own person. He's so wrapped up in individualism that it makes him not a...team player.

It's a survival mechanism.

And the, um. The part about wardens acting like handlers. That's not a part I can easily separate.

I've got to sympathise there. I'm not the world's best team player meself.

Remind me to come in the pub and talk to 'im. I'm quite fond of 'im, in a ...sort of perverse and annoying way.
