I would be very grateful and in debt to the rest of the Barge if no one told the Marquis I'd come back to warden a second time.

I realize it's not a ruse that can be held up for very long, as far as ruses go, but I'm very much at peace after having kissed my girlfriend and I'd like for that peace to last as long as possible.

That's what I imagine it is. I believe the marquis is a remarkable man, but he still very much is just a man no matter how much he wants to make everyone else and himself believe otherwise.
