What do you do when you're living in a wide-awake nightmare and every single breath you take you wish with all the desperation you have that you could undo something you once did but didn't mean to because you didn't understand the consequences?

I know things are better now that I'm on the Barge but I don't know how long it's going to be until I can wake up without feeling panicked that it's all been nothing but a dream or that the Admiral will look at me and think I don't deserve to be here any longer.

And I don't know how precarious my position really is. We're all just...teetering, waiting for gravity to catch up with us until we take the final plunge and I know this is morbid but that's who I am. Morbid...Ned, who's surrounded by death and can't get away from it.

Maybe I just need sleeping pills.

[Ned is Affected by the flood and is more of a basket case than usual. He's been an unwilling guest of the American government since he was nine and revealed his secret gift and for the last twenty years has been a neurotic shut-in with limited access to non-military personnel. And he doesn't bake pies.]

That's very kind of you, but I don't know if you can soothe away twenty years of troubles that are so terrible I'm actually talking about them out loud.

You would be amazed what I could do, dear Ned. But even here, even as diminished as I am, I can't help but reach out to a fellow wounded soul.

Come to me. Let me do what little I can.

I can soothe away your bad thoughts. I can sing your troubles away. I can make you forget your pain and your woes. I can make you a new man.

You would brainwash me.

Sweet Ned, that's such a loaded term. So unwarrantedly hostile. Also, entirely meaningless. No. I would not "brainwash" you; but even in my diminished state, I believe I could bring you some peace.

I don't know how comfortable I would feel with being mesmerized or...whichever it is you're talking about.

It's not something I've ever done before.

I believe just some simple soothing would suffice. Dear Zane will certainly be on hand to prevent anything untoward. So attentive. So conscientious, that sweet boy.

Can I trust him?

I don't usually trust anyone.

I trust him with my life.

Ned. Do you want a good night's sleep or don't you? It's ...ungracious of you, at the very least, to quibble and interrogate me over an offer I made in good faith. Out of the kindness of my hearts.
